Two Young Entrepreneurs in the Construction Industry
S.M.D Construction Inc. is a young start-up company based in Wendake. Officially launched in April 2019, it specializes in construction works and holds a general contractor permit from the Régie du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ). Two young entrepreneurs are at the head of this family business: David Savard (a Native of the Nation huronne-wendat) and his cousin, Dannick Gagné-Morel.
David Savard is 23 years old and he has worked in the construction industry for four years. Dannick Gagné-Morel is 22, and he has three years of experience in the field. These two young men are cousins, and they have completed a diploma of vocational studies (DVS) in carpentry/woodwork and in construction business management, at École des métiers et occupations de l’industrie de la construction (EMOICQ), in Quebec.

S.M.D. Construction Inc. was born after these two young men had worked for different companies. At one point they realized that they had the potential to become self-employed and that it would be an opportunity for them to develop their leadership skills and give free rein to their creativity. The two young men found the name of their enterprise by using the initials of their names: S for Savard, M for Morel, D for David and Dannick.
The two young entrepreneurs completed one full year of training before going into business. During that year, they prepared the start-up of their business and obtained the licences and guarantees required to carry out their activities, including work outside the community. It is indeed because of the RBQ licence that the company is able to perform construction works outside of Wendake. For the moment, their market is in the sector of La Haute-Saint-Charles-Quebec: Wendake, Loretteville, Saint-Émile, Val-Bélair and Neufchâtel. With time, they would like to work elsewhere in Quebec.
The activities of the business range from: new home construction, (only in Wendake); improvements, renovations and interior and exterior finishing; commercial renovation works (subcontracted). The company proceeds with outsourcing for all works to be carried out by trade contractors: foundations, electricity, plumbing, painting, etc.
S.M.D Construction Inc. has two partners, David and Dannick, and two employees, including one young man who has seven years of professional experience and David’s father, who has 25 years of experience. This allows the company to have a high-functioning team and prepare for succession. The young associates make a point of emphasizing their professionalism, their capacity for adapting to their customers’ expectations and budget, their ability to work and deliver fast, and the quality of their after-sale service.
The FNQLEDC accompanied them in their quests for financing to acquire some equipment required for their activities. It is in fact with great pride that we have learned that David and Dannick successfully sought and received funding from the Secrétariat aux affaires autochtones (SAA).
In the immediate future, they plan to diversify their operations by creating a property management company to build apartment rental buildings. One thing is sure: these young entrepreneurs are overflowing with passion, drive and determination.
We congratulate them on this unqualified success and it is our wish that all of their valiant efforts will be rewarded with great success and many constructions in the years to come!
